Geschichte:

Dr. Proton has taken over Area 51 and nuked Las Vegas. He uses the spacecraft at Area 51 to contact aliens around the galaxy and recruit them for his army. Dr. Proton has also reanimated the Area 51 guards to do his bidding, and given them bionic enhancements. With this army, Dr. Proton plans to take over the world and kill Duke.

Interessantes:

• Wahnsinn: 1997 angekündigt und 14 Jahre in Entwicklung! Das hat noch kein Spiel vorher geschafft und trotz Dauergewinner des Vaporware Awards ist der Hype ungebrochen.
• Der offizielle Releasetermin ist nicht mehr "When it's done", sondern der 10. & 14. Juni 2011!
• Der Name Forever entstand ursprünglich aus 4 und Eva. Letzteres war der Name der Protagonistin eines geplanten Sidescrollers, welcher nach dem Erfolg von Duke Nukem 3D zu einem viertem Duke-Nukem-Spiel umfunktioniert wurde:

  Who thought of the name, Duke Nukem Forever, and why use this name for your game?
  
  It was originally a bit of a pun. The main protagonist in our game was a female Russian soldier called Eva – her last name was a little too un-PC for today's generation (it was a different time). So when we as a group were coming up with a name, we thought it would be funny if Duke fell for Eva and her massive assets, and given this was the 4th installation of Duke, the name “Duke Nukem 4 Eva” was born. Over time the 4Eva eventually transformed to Forever.

• Angefangen mit der Engine von Quake 2 kommt letztendlich eine sehr stark modifizierte Unreal Engine 2 zum Einsatz. Das die trotz des Alters und dank der Modifikationen nicht schlecht aussehen muss, zeigen die neusten Screenshots oder auch der Teaser von 2007.

  3.31 - What level is DNF's technology at right now?
  To answer this question, we have a quote from George Broussard: "We're not UT level tech. We're using some of the ut2k3 stuff. Static Meshes are nice. We've written a tremendous amount of our on rendering code over the last year. I don't really think we will even be recognized as an Unreal engine game at this point."
