Trivia:
- The two mission CDs were released in 1997.
- Just like "The Covert Operations" the missions do not really tie in with the story.
- Both CDs together feature a lot of new units, 34 new missions, 16 new soundtrack additions and more than 200 new, partly extra large, multiplayer maps.
- An Easter egg, similar to the one from TD: CO, also exists in the "Counterstrike" expansion. Hold the Shift key and click on the speaker in the main menu in the upper right corner. Spanning over four bonus missions one is battling against mutated Giant Ants, for which Westwood also envisioned a comeback – in Renegade 2.
Brett Sperry was actually against secret levels, Adam Isgreen explained on 01/08/2007 and elaborated furthermore on how the idea came into existence:We were looking for something to do akin to the Dinosaur Island in C&C. The giant ants came from me, since I love the movie THEM! (classic stuff!) and RA's time-line fit the fantastical fiction that THEM was born from, so it seemed a great fit. I got our writer to make that conversation between the soldiers about formic acid, then had our publishing staff put it on the bottom of the pages of the RA manual in morse code.
Originally, Bret didn't want to do any secret levels, and so I kinda "forced" the issue by doing that. Although he was mad at me for doing it, I know he knew what I was doing the entire time, so he obviously didn't mind. Once people figured out the morse code, it became pretty much a done deal at that point. - There are several inofficial mission CDs for RA1, e.g.:
- Command Missions Vol. 2
- Conqueror 2
- Remember Pearl Harbor
-
Both add-ons have also been released on 08/28/1998 for the PlayStation as "C&C: Red Alert: Retaliation". In contrast to the PC versions having only texts as briefings, 19 new FMVs were shot exclusively for Counterstrike incl. one for the ant missions. Carville already showed up as Allied general, a role he is continuing in RA2. The Soviet general Topolov on the other hand was never seen again in any RA title, since he appropriately cleared his office in the outro.
All videos from Counterstrike can be added to the PC version subsequently by using the "Red Alert: The Lost Files" mod, download here!
