• Valve does not care about the Half-Life² "Beta" leak anymore and it is de facto legal by official side, since Erik Johnson on inquiry in Steam answered the following:

  We do not care about the leak anymore, but we do not want it as a topic of discussion.

• Behind the leaker "ANON" is Axel Gembe alias "Ago" alias "Osama bin Leaker".
• Almost eight years after the leak a four-page article "The Boy Who Stole Half-Life 2" about the background, history, course of action and complete succession of events of the leak was published. Worth reading!
• Almost 20 years later Axel commented on the course of events:

  Back in 2003 I didn't plan to steal the game. I remember being hyped from the first HL2 ad and when the website was up I decided to look for some more information that might have been accidentally left on the servers. Instead I stumbled across a huge security hole that was trivial to use, basically multiple accounts with empty passwords, and I just couldn't resist. It was wrong to steal and share the development files and I do regret it, though I do enjoy this kind of content because of its historic value. A big reason for the mild sentence was that the German justice system's goal isn't punishment, the focus is on rehabilitation. The judge saw that I changed my life, I got a job, moved into my own place and didn't break any laws in the 3 years it took until sentencing.

1. Where to download the "Beta"?
   Download BitComet and click on this link:

2. I downloaded the "Beta", what now?
   Make sure that you have WinRAR 3.2 or newer installed and more than 3 GiB of free space left. Unzip the archive; the password is "www.bittorrentmovies.de". After that unzip anon-hl2-part001.rar and make sure that WinRAR is also unzipping from the other parts.
3. OK, all unzipped – and now?
   Create a shortcut to hl2.exe and add in "Target" field the parameter "-fullscreen -toconsole" to it. Launch Half-Life 2 and enter "map " – with trailing space! Below the line a selection of map names appears, choose one and there you go!
4. I'm unable to look around by mouse!
   Open the options menu and tick the checkbox behind "Mouse Look".
5. Are there any displays or a HUD?
   Yes, type in the console "cl_drawhud 1". Should this not work, type in "impulse 101".
6. How do I open the console?
   Either by "^" or with "ö".
7. There are red "ERROR" 3D letters everywhere and the eyes are white!
   This is due to missing textures and/or you do not have a DirectX 9 graphics card. Things are put right by the second patch, the Detonator 52.16 respectively Catalyst 3.8 or simply a DirectX 9 capable graphics card.
8. What about the first patch?
   It has no effect! You do not have to load it.
9. What about the second patch?
   The second one is a mystery and allegedly ca. 500 MB in size plus not yet very distributed. It is named "Half.Life.2.Beta.Patch2-ANON.tar", fixes all texture, sound, AI and script issues and even contains an intro. Unfortunately to this day I do not know any link or similar – it is supposed to be available in the IRC network.
10. Is there also a third patch?
    Nom, not that I know of.

    This stuff is only loaded via the "map" command, it does not work with "Create Server".

    Add to your hl2.exe shortcut the parameter "-fullscreen" (at "Target").

16. Why is "Beta" always quoted?
    The "Beta" is in fact not really a true beta, but Build -4.
17. Are there any other versions except -4? If so, WHERE?
    Yes, reportedly an alpha and four betas. This "Beta" here is the Build -4. A Build -2 is supposed to be contained in hl2_wmods. The other versions are currently not so available, but there is a clip from one of the other "Beta".
18. By unzipping Half.Life.2.Beta.HL1Ports-ANON I get an error at the 15th part!
    Replace the broken part with hl1ports.part15.rar. Should this not work, try this:
    Make sure you have WinRAR 3.2 or newer installed. Start WinRAR and select the broken 15. Click on the First Aid symbol so that the repair function is called. Treat the 15 as RAR format and create then the "rebuild" of 15. Close WinRAR and delete the broken 15, but back up the filename beforehand! Rename now the "rebuild" with the backed up name, so that "rebuild" is named the same as the broken 15. Unzip now all parts normally. There is now a CRC error at 15, which is no longer bad since the file operation does not (no longer) terminate. Select now in the "Search" window not the 15, but the 16! It is now going to continue unzipping all.
19. Can I see the great summary again?

20. Is Team.Fortress.2.leaked.by.ANON.zip a fake?
    Yes. The leaked source code from HL² was compiled and clever names chosen for other files. Definite proof are e.g. the path attributes within the EXE files. ANON has set the following:
    U:\tf2\src\launcher_main\Release\launcher_main.pdb
    While the files from Team.Fortress.2.leaked.by.ANON has set this:
    C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\TheRising\Desktop\src_main\launcher_main\Release\launcher_main.pdb
    But according to the INSTALL.LOG the user folder has to be "Erik". TheRising is obviously the faker's name. More evidence:
    • Directory "erik@valve.com" has to be named "erik@valvesoftware.com"
    • Directory Steam\SteamApps\erik@valve.com\tf2\ contains all the binary files, but have to be located in Steam\SteamApps\erik@valve.com\tf2\bin\
    • Valve would rather not distribute an internal beta with Steam
    Besides that ANON had never released TF2:

    There's no need to reason here. I personally asked Axel Gembe if he ever leaked a copy of TF2, and he didn't.

    Yeah, he had some unreleased content. If I recall correctly he had a playable game too.
